2024 Niue $2 Heroes of Greek Mythology: Perseus 1oz .999 Silver (No Tax)
The second coin to be released in the Heroes of Greek Mythology Series features the Greek Hero, Perseus. Perseus is most recognized as the Greek Hero who slayed the Gorgon Medusa.
This 2024 1oz coin depicts Perseus with a sword in one hand and the head of Medusa in the other. Accompanying this image is the inscription "PERSEUS" between Greek inspired graphics. The obverse of this coin features the Niue coat of arms along with the face value and the year of issue.
Brief Overview of the Mythology
Born to a mortal mother, Danae, and an immortal father, Zeus, Perseus was not only a Greek Hero but also a demigod. Due to fear of a prophecy, King Acrisius (Danae's father) cast both his daughter and grandson out of Argos in a wooden chest out to sea. Out of fear for his demigod son, Zeus spoke to Poseidon (God of the Sea) to manipulate the currents so that his mistress and child were safe.
When Perseus grew, he became known in Seriphos as a man with great physical strength and courage. King Polydectes of Seriphos wanted Danae as his wife but saw Perseus as an obstacle to his wishes. Overhearing Perseus boast that he could single-handedly slay the Gorgon Medusa, King Polydectes challenged Perseus to do just that - as a way to get rid of him. If Perseus could not slay Medusa, King Polydectes would be allowed to marry his mother. With the help of items from Graiai and the God Hermes, Perseus was able to slay Medusa.
