The Royal Canadian Mint's Gold Maple Leaf (GML) coins are among the world's most popular pure gold coins, with more than 29 million troy ounces sold since their introduction in 1979. The GML was also the first bullion coin to achieve the heightened standard of 9999 purity.
This 2024 1oz Gold Maple features features the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III for the first time. Since its introduction in 1979, the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf has only ever featured a bust of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Late Majesty is the only monarch that generations of Canadians have known, but her passing in September 2022 means that her son Charles now reigns as King Charles III. The new British monarch is shown here in left-profile relief, a change in orientation from Her Late Majesty's right-profile portrait. The switch in orientation from one monarch to the next is a British coining tradition that also applies to Canadian coins.
