The Union Bank was founded in 1865 as the Union Bank of Lower Canada; the name was changed in 1886 to the Union Bank of Canada. At its peak, the bank had 329 branches across Canada, with good representation in the western provinces. However, the Union Bank was purchased by the Royal Bank, and thus merged in 1925.
