Description

Ancient Rome 222-235 AD Severus Alexander Copper AS Very Fine (VF-20)

Obverse: Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Severus Alexander facing right.
Reverse: Mars-VLTOR; Mars advancing to the right, transverse spear in his right hand, with a shield in left.

Severus Alexander was born Marcus Aurelius Severus Alexander on October 1, 208 in Phoenicia (modern Lebanon), and became Emperor of Rome when he was around 14 years old, making him the youngest emperor in Roman history. Severus Alexander was mostly incompetent when it came to military affairs, angering his generals, who considered him dishonorable and believed him unfit to be Emperor. Thus, in 235, Severus Alexander and his mother Julia Mamaea were assassinated in Germany. After his assassination, his economic policies were discarded, and the Roman currency was devalued, which signalled the beginning of the period known as the "Crisis of the Third Century", which brought the Roman empire to the brink of collapse.
