Valence is a commune (civil township) in Southeast France, situated on the left bank of the Rhone, about 100 kilometers south of Lyon. The commune was founded in 121BC, after the invasion of Gallia Narbonensis by the Romans, and was then known as Valentia Julia. It is believed to have been the see of a bishopric from as early as the fourth century.
