Description

1977 London, Ontario, Trade Dollar Token - John Graves Simcoe, Lieutenant-Governor. Image is an example of what you will receive.

Simcoe, the first lieutenant governor of what is now Ontario, founded York (Toronto). But his greatest legacy perhaps is that in 1793 he led the legislature to pass an Act Against Slavery that extinguished that institution in the province by 1810.

He told the legislature, "The principles of the British Constitution do not admit of that slavery which Christianity condemns. The moment I assume the government of Upper Canada, under no modification will I assent to a law that discriminates by dishonest policy between natives of Africa, America, or Europe."
