2010 Canada $200 22-Karat - Petroleum and Oil Trade Gold Coin.

The silky black liquid that modern society readily associates with the automobile has been used by humanity long before the invention of the horseless carriage. Thousands of years ago, people were using petroleum as fuel for fire, lighting, medicinal purposes and warfare.

North Americas early settlers also valued oil for lighting and as axle grease for their wagons. The first notion that this valuable fuel could be harvested from the Canadian landscape emerged towards the end of the 1700's when bitumen was found along Alberta's Athabasca and Clearwater Rivers. It took a few entrepreneurs to keep exploration and development going; the following century, Ontario became a hub of activity when Canada's first oil production began at Oil Springs in 1858.

Blowouts from early wells were common. Spectacular fires were also characteristic as the fledgling industry learned to control the immense distilling temperatures that could ignite crude oil. Wood, another highly-combustible material, was also present in the drilling rigs, storage tanks and barrels, even the horse-drawn wagons that formed the industry's first distribution network.

When the railway arrived, so did significant advancements in transportation; a single tank car could deliver larger quantities of crude oil to refineries and finished products to consumers in a safer, more efficient manner. During the next few decades, demand skyrocketed as Canadians began their love affair with the automobile and enthusiastically embraced the farm tractor. Oil became an increasingly significant staple of everyday life - a global reality that made Canada one of the world's major producers.
