2024 Canada 45th Anniversary of the GML Pure Gold Fractional Set (No Tax)

Canada’s Gold Maple Leaf (GML) bullion coin celebrates its sapphire (45th) anniversary in 2024, and the Royal Canadian Mint is marking the occasion in a very special way on this pure gold fractional set. As with previous gold fractional sets, your four coins feature an inspiring maple leaf portrait that is pure Canadiana in 99.99% pure gold. The double dates (“1979—2024”) commemorate the GML’s sapphire (45th) anniversary, as does the blue sapphire droplet that adorns the 1 oz. piece.

Shimmering like a drop of dew in the morning light, the sapphire is a sparkling nod to the first GML issued in 1979, when it featured Arnold Machin’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on its obverse—the same effigy that appears here.

The sapphire has long been regarded as a symbol of the heavens due to its deep blue colour. It is also associated with royalty, and it is both the traditional and modern gift for celebrating a 45th wedding anniversary. It’s also September’s birthstone.

Depicted on the obverse of these four coins, the late Queen Elizabeth II was the first British monarch to celebrate a Sapphire Jubilee or 65 years of reign, and several famous sapphire pieces were part of her priceless jewellery collection. To mark the occasion in 2017, which was also the 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation, then-Governor General David Johnston presented a special gift from Canada: a diamond and blue sapphire brooch. A diamond and sapphire set given to her by her father, King George VI, as a wedding gift in 1947 were also among her favourite jewels.

The leaves on these coins are from the sugar maple, Acer saccharum. True to its name, the sugar maple tree’s sap has the highest concentration of sugar, and that’s why this Canadian maple is prized by maple syrup producers. A sugar maple leaf also inspired the design for the first GML bullion coin issued in 1979; created by former RCM Master Engraver Walter Ott (1920-2020), that lone maple leaf has become the signature design for all of Canada’s Maple Leaf bullion coins and special issues.

The four coins share the same reverse design by Claudio D’Angelo. Each one features two sugar maple leaves (Acer saccharum) on a twig, accompanied by the double dates “1979—2024” commemorating the 45th or sapphire anniversary of Canada’s Gold Maple Leaf (GML) bullion coin. On the 1 oz. coin, a royal blue sapphire is shaped like a water droplet that elegantly falls from the largest engraved leaf. On all four coins, the reverse includes the words “CANADA”, the coin’s purity and weight, and the year “2024”. Like the first GML issued in 1979, each obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Arnold Machin.

Special Features:
• Celebrate the GML's sapphire (45th) anniversary! The four coins in this fractional set —1 oz. (30 mm), ¼ oz. (20 mm), 1/10 oz. (16 mm) and 1/20 oz. (14.1 mm) — are all double-dated to commemorate the Gold Maple Leaf (GML) bullion coin’s 45th anniversary in 2024.
• Genuine sapphire. A fitting anniversary tribute, the 1 oz. coin features a genuine AAA royal blue sapphire shaped like a water droplet. It gracefully falls from the sugar maple leaf that provided the foundation for this unforgettable design.
• A rarity! The Royal Canadian Mint's only gold fractional set launching in 2023, this 2024 set features an extremely low mintage—a lower mintage (450 sets) than even the 2023 edition.
• Impeccable details. Already a challenging design element, the intricate maple leaf portrait defies expectation and preserves its intricate details as the coins decrease in size.
• Reverse proof finish. A reverse proof finish — brilliant relief on frosted/matte field — puts extra emphasis (and shine) on the engraving.
• Elegant presentation. This four-coin set comes packaged in a red lacquer case with a black set-up box.

Packaging:
The four coins are individually encapsulated and presented side-by-side in a red lacquer wooden box with a black set-up box.
