2024 P Alabama USA American Innovation Dollar Uncirculated (MS-60)
The United States Mint American Innovation $1 Coin Program is a multi-year series honoring innovation and innovators with $1 coins from each State, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Northern Mariana Islands. The American Innovation $1 Coins in the rolls and bags were minted at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. The Alabama coin is the second of 2024.
The dollar depicts the power and force of the Saturn V rocket, which was designed and built at the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, lifting off with the Moon in the background.
In 1967, NASA initiated the Apollo 4 mission by launching the inaugural Saturn V rocket. Standing at 363 feet tall, the rocket generated 7.6 million pounds of thrust at launch, producing more power than 85 Hoover Dams. This colossal rocket was last launched in 1973, without crew, to transport the Skylab space station into Earth’s orbit.
All coins in the series feature the same obverse (heads side) design, depicting the Statue of Liberty in profile. This design also incorporates a privy mark symbolizing industry and innovation with a stylized gear, which undergoes slight annual changes. The inscriptions on the coin include "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "$1." The obverse design was created by Artistic Infusion Program Artist Justin Kunz and sculpted by Medallic Artist Phebe Hemphill.
