Sweden 1835CB 1/16th Riksdaler Almost Uncirculated (AU50)
Charles XIV John of Sweden was one of the most remarkable monarchs of nineteenth-century Europe because he began life not as a prince, but as a commoner in France. Born Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, he rose through the ranks of the French army during the French Revolution and became one of Napoleon Bonaparte's most successful marshals. In 1810, the Swedish parliament unexpectedly elected him heir to the Swedish throne after the aging King Charles XIII was left without a suitable successor. Bernadotte converted to Lutheranism, adopted the name Charles John (Karl Johan), and eventually became King of Sweden and Norway in 1818, founding the Bernadotte dynasty that still reigns in Sweden today.
As crown prince and later king, Charles XIV John pursued a pragmatic foreign policy that distanced Sweden from Napoleon and aligned it with the coalition powers fighting France. In return for Sweden's support, he secured the transfer of Norway from Denmark to Sweden in 1814, creating the Swedish-Norwegian union that lasted until 1905. During his reign, he focused on maintaining peace, improving the economy, and strengthening the monarchy after decades of war and political instability. Although some critics viewed him as authoritarian and increasingly conservative in his later years, his policies helped bring stability and prosperity to Sweden and Norway. By the time of his death in 1844, the former French marshal had successfully transformed himself into a respected Scandinavian monarch, leaving behind a dynasty that continues to occupy the Swedish throne more than two centuries later.
