Russia 1842 Nicholas I Rouble VF-EF (VF30)
Nicholas I of Russia ruled the Russian Empire from 1825 to 1855 and is remembered as one of the most conservative and autocratic rulers of nineteenth-century Europe. He ascended the throne amid the turmoil of the Decembrist Revolt, when a group of army officers attempted to prevent his accession and introduce constitutional reforms. The rebellion deeply influenced Nicholas's outlook, convincing him that revolutionary ideas posed a grave threat to both Russia and the monarchy. As a result, his reign was characterized by strict censorship, an expanded secret police, and the promotion of the official ideology of "Orthodoxy, Autocracy, and Nationality," which emphasized loyalty to the Russian Orthodox Church, the emperor, and the state.
In foreign affairs, Nicholas sought to position Russia as the defender of conservative order in Europe. He helped suppress revolutionary movements, including the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, earning the nickname "the Gendarme of Europe." However, his reign ultimately ended in disappointment with the outbreak of the Crimean War against an alliance of the Ottoman Empire, Britain, France, and Sardinia. The war exposed serious weaknesses in Russia's military, transportation network, and administration, revealing that the empire had fallen behind the rapidly industrializing powers of Western Europe. Nicholas died in 1855 before the war concluded, and his successor, Alexander II of Russia, would undertake a series of major reforms—including the emancipation of the serfs—in response to the shortcomings that the Crimean War had laid bare.
