Russia 1822 Alexander I Rouble VF-EF (VF30)
Alexander I of Russia ruled the Russian Empire from 1801 to 1825 and was one of the most influential monarchs of the Napoleonic era. He came to the throne following the assassination of his father, Paul I of Russia, in a palace coup in which Alexander was aware of the conspiracy, though historians continue to debate the extent of his involvement. Educated in the ideals of the Enlightenment, Alexander initially pursued moderate reforms, seeking to modernize Russia's administration and improve education. However, the challenges posed by revolutionary France and later by Napoleon Bonaparte soon came to dominate his reign.
Alexander is best remembered for his role in the defeat of Napoleon. After a period of uneasy cooperation with France following the Treaty of Tilsit, relations deteriorated, leading to Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812. The disastrous French campaign, combined with Russian resistance and the harsh winter, marked a turning point in the Napoleonic Wars. Alexander subsequently led Russia into the coalition that defeated Napoleon and entered Paris with the victorious Allied armies in 1814. At the Congress of Vienna, he played a leading role in reshaping Europe after the wars and became a principal architect of the Holy Alliance. In his later years, Alexander grew increasingly conservative and religious, abandoning many of his earlier reformist ambitions. His death in 1825 sparked a succession crisis that led to the Decembrist Revolt, one of the first major challenges to autocratic rule in nineteenth-century Russia.
