German States 1875A Prussia Wilhelm I 5 Marks Very Fine (VF20)

Wilhelm I was King of Prussia from 1861 and the first German Emperor (Kaiser) from 1871 until his death in 1888. Born into the Hohenzollern dynasty, he initially had a military career and was shaped by the upheavals of the Napoleonic era. When he became king, he soon became involved in constitutional conflict with the Prussian parliament over military reforms, a crisis that set the stage for his partnership with Otto von Bismarck. Wilhelm was generally conservative and cautious by temperament, but he ultimately supported Bismarck’s policy of strengthening the army and expanding Prussian influence in German affairs.

Wilhelm’s reign is most closely associated with the unification of Germany through a series of wars: against Denmark in 1864, Austria in 1866, and France in the Franco-Prussian War. These victories allowed Bismarck to unify the German states under Prussian leadership, culminating in Wilhelm being proclaimed German Emperor in 1871 at the Palace of Versailles. As emperor, Wilhelm I presided over the early years of the German Empire, which rapidly industrialized and became a major European power. Although Bismarck handled much of the day-to-day governance, Wilhelm provided the dynastic authority and stability that helped hold the new empire together. He died in 1888, the so-called “Year of the Three Emperors,” and was succeeded briefly by his son Frederick III and then his grandson Wilhelm II.
