German States 1764 Bavaria Thaler Extra Fine (EF40)

Maximilian III Joseph, Elector of Bavaria was the last ruler of the Bavarian line of the House of Wittelsbach, governing Electorate of Bavaria from 1745 until his death in 1777. He inherited a territory weakened by the War of the Austrian Succession and focused on internal recovery rather than military ambition. Known for his prudent and reform-minded approach, Maximilian worked to stabilize Bavaria’s finances, encourage agriculture and industry, and promote education. His policies reflected elements of enlightened absolutism, emphasizing practical improvements to the welfare of his state and its population.

Maximilian III Joseph was also a patron of the arts and sciences, contributing to the cultural life of Bavaria and supporting institutions of learning. Despite these achievements, his death without a direct heir triggered a succession crisis, leading to the War of the Bavarian Succession, as rival powers contested control of his lands. Although Bavaria remained intact, his passing marked the end of a distinct Wittelsbach branch and underscored the fragile balance of power within the Holy Roman Empire during the late 18th century.

Obverse: Draped bust of Maximilian III Joseph facing right, with the legend around and the mintmark (if present) below.
Reverse: Crowned and haloed Madonna with child holding an imperial orb and sceptre in front of a radiant sun, with the legend around, and the date below.
