Cuba 1953 Peso Brilliant Uncirculated (MS63)

José Martí (1853–1895) was a key figure in Cuba’s struggle for independence from Spain and is widely regarded as a national hero of Cuba. A writer, poet, and political activist, Martí spent much of his life in exile, where he organized support for the Cuban independence movement and articulated a vision of a free and just republic. He played a central role in launching the Cuban War of Independence in 1895 but was killed in one of its early battles. Martí’s legacy endures not only for his role in the fight for independence but also for his influential writings on liberty, anti-imperialism, and Latin American identity. This coin was issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his birth.

Obverse: A radiant sun rising over the sea with a key in the foreground, denomination, weight, and fineness below, with the legend around.
Reverse: A portrait of José Martí facing left, with a five pointed sparkling star near the face, legend above, and double dates on either side of the portrait.
