Sweden 1921W 2 Kroner Gem Brilliant Uncirculated (MS65)

This coin was issued to commemorate the Swedish War of Liberation (1521-23), also known as Gustav Vasa's Liberation War. This conflict was a rebellion led by Gustav I of Sweden against Danish control of Sweden within the Kalmar Union. The conflict was sparked in part by outrage over the Stockholm Bloodbath, when the Danish king Christian II of Denmark ordered the execution of Swedish nobles and opponents. Gustav Vasa rallied support among peasants and regional leaders, particularly in Dalarna, gradually building a resistance movement against Danish forces.

Over the course of the war, Gustav’s forces gained momentum, capturing key strongholds and receiving support from the Hanseatic city of Lübeck. By 1523, Danish authority in Sweden had collapsed, and Gustav was elected king, marking Sweden’s independence from the Kalmar Union.
