Sweden 1897 Jubilee 2 Kroner Gem Brilliant Uncirculated (MS65)
Oscar II of Sweden ruled as King of Sweden and Norway from 1872 until 1905 (and as King of Sweden alone until 1907), presiding over a period of relative stability but growing political change. A cultured and intellectually inclined monarch, Oscar II took a strong interest in literature, science, and education, and was known for his efforts to promote learning and public discourse. Although he initially supported a more traditional, monarch-centered system of governance, he gradually adapted to the rise of parliamentary democracy, particularly in Sweden, where political reforms expanded the role of elected institutions during his reign.
His rule is especially notable for the peaceful dissolution of the union between Sweden and Norway in 1905. Tensions had been building for years over issues of autonomy and foreign policy, and although Oscar II resisted the separation, he ultimately accepted Norway’s decision to become independent rather than risk armed conflict. This diplomatic resolution is often seen as a significant achievement, helping maintain stability in Scandinavia. Oscar II’s reign thus marked the transition of Sweden toward a more modern constitutional monarchy while also witnessing the end of its union with Norway.
This coin was issued to commemorate his 25th Anniversary as King of Sweden and Norway in 1897.
