Hong Kong 1897 5 Cents Choice Brilliant Uncirculated (MS64)
Hong Kong came under British control in the 19th century as a result of imperial expansion and conflict with the Qing dynasty. Following the First Opium War, the island of Hong Kong was ceded to Britain under the Treaty of Nanking in 1842. Later agreements expanded British control to include the Kowloon Peninsula and the New Territories, the latter leased in 1898 for 99 years. Under British rule, Hong Kong developed into a major global trading port and financial center, benefiting from its strategic location and relatively open economic system, though governance remained firmly in colonial hands with limited political participation for the local Chinese population.
Throughout the 20th century, Hong Kong grew rapidly despite challenges such as Japanese occupation during World War II and waves of migration from mainland China. By the late 20th century, negotiations between Britain and the People's Republic of China led to the Sino-British Joint Declaration, which set the terms for the territory’s return to Chinese sovereignty in 1997 under the principle of “one country, two systems.” British rule left a lasting imprint on Hong Kong’s legal system, institutions, and international character, while also remaining a subject of debate regarding colonial governance and the limits of local representation.
