Great Britain 1710 Anne 4 Pence EF-AU (EF45)
Anne, Queen of Great Britain was the last monarch of the House of Stuart and the first sovereign of a unified Great Britain, following the Acts of Union 1707. She reigned from 1702 until her death in 1714, a period marked by significant political and military developments, including the War of the Spanish Succession. During her reign, England (and later Great Britain) emerged as a major European power, aided by military successes under commanders such as the Duke of Marlborough. Despite these achievements, Anne’s rule was also characterized by intense rivalry between the Whigs and Tories, which shaped much of her domestic governance.
Personally, Anne’s life was marked by ill health and tragedy. She had been pregnant a total of seventeen times, suffering miscarriages or stillbirths for at least twelve of these pregnancies. Of her five liveborn children, four died before the age of two. Her only living child, William, Duke of Gloucester, died at age 11. This led to the succession passing to the House of Hanover upon her death, bringing George I of Great Britain to the throne. Although she was not considered a dominant political figure, Anne played an important role in overseeing the formation of Great Britain and maintaining the monarchy during a time of transition.
