German States 1913D Bavaria 5 Marks Almost Uncirculated (AU50)
Otto of Bavaria (1848–1916) was the younger brother of Ludwig II of Bavaria and technically reigned as King of Bavaria from 1886 until his death. However, Otto never exercised real power due to severe mental illness, which had manifested years before he came to the throne. As a result, his uncle Luitpold, Prince Regent of Bavaria governed on his behalf, followed later by Luitpold’s son, Ludwig III of Bavaria. Otto’s reign was therefore largely symbolic, with the monarchy continuing under a regency system rather than direct royal rule.
Otto’s condition and isolation reflected the broader instability within the Bavarian royal family during this period, particularly following the dramatic deposition and mysterious death of his brother Ludwig II. Otto spent most of his life under medical supervision, removed from public life and state affairs. In 1913, the regency formally ended when Ludwig III assumed the crown, effectively deposing Otto, though he retained his royal title until his death.
