Ludwig II of Bavaria, often called the “Fairy Tale King,” ruled the Kingdom of Bavaria from 1864 until his death. Ascending the throne at a young age, Ludwig became known less for political leadership and more for his deep devotion to art, music, and architecture. He was a major patron of the composer Richard Wagner, whose operas he supported financially and admired intensely. Ludwig’s reign coincided with the unification of Germany under Otto von Bismarck, during which Bavaria lost much of its independence, leaving Ludwig increasingly withdrawn from state affairs. Instead, he devoted himself to elaborate building projects, including the famous Neuschwanstein Castle, as well as Linderhof and Herrenchiemsee, which reflected his fascination with romanticism and absolute monarchy.
Despite their beauty, Ludwig’s costly architectural ambitions and his disengagement from governance alarmed Bavarian officials. By the 1880s, concerns over his mental state and financial management led a group of ministers to declare him unfit to rule. In 1886, he was deposed and placed under the care of physicians, including Bernhard von Gudden, who had supported the diagnosis of mental illness without a formal examination. Just days after his removal, Ludwig and von Gudden were found dead under mysterious circumstances in Lake Starnberg. The official ruling was suicide by drowning, but the lack of clear evidence, combined with Ludwig’s known swimming ability, the lack of fluid in his lungs, and the unexplained death of his doctor, has fueled enduring speculation that he may have been murdered or died under unclear conditions while attempting escape.
