Dominican Republic 1955 Peso Choice Brilliant Uncirculated (MS64)
This coin was issued to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Trujillo era. Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina (nicknamed "El Jefe") was a Dominican military officer and dictator who ruled the Dominican Republic with an iron grip from 1930 until his assassination in May of 1961, establishing one of the most repressive dictatorships in Latin American history. Rising to power through the military following the aftermath of the United States occupation of the Dominican Republic, Trujillo consolidated control through a cult of personality, strict censorship, and widespread use of secret police. While his regime did oversee infrastructure development and some economic growth, these gains were heavily overshadowed by corruption, brutality, and the concentration of wealth and power in his own hands.
One of the most notorious episodes of his rule was the Parsley Massacre, in which thousands of Haitians and dark-skinned Dominicans were killed on his orders in an effort to “whiten” the population and assert nationalist control over the border region. Trujillo maintained close ties with foreign governments, particularly the United States, for much of his rule, though international support waned as his human rights abuses became more widely known. His assassination in 1961 marked the end of his regime and opened the door to a turbulent period of political transition in the Dominican Republic.
