Barbados 1788 Penny Almost Uncirculated (AU50)
Obverse: The head of a slave facing left, wearing a coronet and a three-feather plume, with the text "I serve" below. While the imagry is debated and could be a bastardized depiction of the future George IV, as the crown appears similar to the traditional Prince of Wales crown, the text mimics the Prince of Wales motto "Ich dien" (German for I serve), referencing the enslaved population.
Reverse: A large pineapple, which resulting in the coin having the moniker "Pinapple Pennies", with the denomination to the right and the date below.
Specifications:
Engraver: John Gregory Hancock
Composition: Copper
Weight: 13.38 g
Diameter: 32 mm
Edge: Plain
Die Axis: ↑↑
Mint: Possibly the Royal Mint, London, United Kingdom
