This coin was issued commemorate the 650th Anniversary of the founding of the University of Pisa. Founded in 1343 by Pope Clement VI, the University of Pisa is one of the oldest universities in Europe. It gained international recognition during the Renaissance, particularly for its scientific studies, and is famously associated with Galileo Galilei, who taught mathematics there in the late 16th century. Over the centuries, the university expanded its disciplines and reputation, becoming a major center for research and learning in Italy. Today, it remains a prestigious public institution known for its contributions to science, engineering, and the humanities.
