This coin was issued to commemorate the 500th Anniversary of death of Lorenzo de' Medici (1449-1492). Known as "Lorenzo the Magnificent", de' Medici was a powerful Florentine statesman and one of the most influential patrons of the Italian Renaissance. As the de facto ruler of Florence, he skillfully balanced diplomacy and politics to maintain stability among rival Italian states. Lorenzo was a great supporter of art and learning, sponsoring figures such as Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Botticelli, helping to shape the cultural flowering of the period. His leadership and patronage made Florence a center of humanism, creativity, and political influence during the late 15th century.
