The original United States Pledge of Allegiance, written in 1892 by Captain George Thatcher Balch, read: "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
The current pledge was written in 1954, and added the words "under God", to now read: I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
