1831 Small Letters USA Quarter VF-EF (VF30)

The United States quarter of the 1800s reflects a fascinating period in the development of American coinage. Throughout the century, quarters were struck in silver and featured several important designs, beginning with the Draped Bust quarter, which had been introduced in 1796. After production resumed in 1804, the Draped Bust design continued until 1838, when it was replaced by the Capped Bust quarter. The Capped Bust design, created by Chief Engraver William Kneass, featured a portrait of Liberty wearing a distinctive cap, while the reverse displayed an eagle with outstretched wings. In 1838, the Liberty Seated quarter was introduced, depicting Liberty seated on a rock and holding a shield and staff. This design remained in use for the rest of the 19th century, with several variations and changes to the reverse and other details over the years.

The 1800s also saw major changes in the production and circulation of American quarters as the United States expanded westward and its economy grew. Silver quarters were an important part of everyday commerce, although their relatively high value meant they did not circulate as frequently as smaller denominations. Quarters from this period are particularly appealing to collectors because they combine beautiful early American designs with the history of a rapidly developing nation.
