1963 USA Half Dollar Proof
The Franklin half dollar was issued by the United States Mint from 1948 to 1963 and features a portrait of Founding Father Benjamin Franklin on the obverse. Designed by John R. Sinnock, the reverse displays the Liberty Bell, symbolizing American independence, along with a small eagle to satisfy legal requirements. Struck in 90% silver, the series is notable for being one of the last U.S. coins intended for circulation to feature a non-president. Production ended in 1963 following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, after which the Franklin half was replaced by the Kennedy half dollar in 1964.
Obverse: Portrait of Benjamin Franklin facing right, with the legend around, and date to the right of Franklin's neck.
Reverse: The Liberty Bell with a small eagle to the right, country name above, motto to the left, and the denomination below.
