1853 USA Cent Extra Fine (EF-40)
The Liberty Head, or Coronet Head, United States one cent was introduced in 1816, following a temporary suspension of large-cent production during the War of 1812. Designed by Chief Engraver Robert Scot, the new obverse featured a left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original states. The reverse retained the familiar wreath design surrounding the denomination ONE CENT, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the outside. The Liberty Head type is generally divided into the Matron Head cents of 1816–1839 and the Braided Hair cents of 1839–1857, reflecting the significant changes made to Liberty's portrait during the series.
The series is particularly interesting to collectors because of its numerous portrait varieties and unusual issues. The Matron Head portrait was modified several times during the 1830s, and 1839 is especially notable for its transitional varieties, including the famous Silly Head and Booby Head cents. Beginning in 1839, Christian Gobrecht's more youthful Braided Hair portrait became the standard, with Liberty's hair arranged in a prominent braid. Braided Hair cents continued to be struck until 1857, when the large cent was finally discontinued because the rising cost of copper and the size and weight of the coin made it increasingly impractical. These coins represent the final chapter of America's large-cent era before the introduction of the much smaller Flying Eagle cent.
