The Morgan Dollar is one of the most iconic and widely collected United States silver coins. First introduced in 1878, the Morgan Dollar was designed by George T. Morgan, an English-born engraver who joined the U.S. Mint in 1876. The obverse features a portrait of Lady Liberty, modeled after Anna Willess Williams, while the reverse depicts a powerful bald eagle holding an olive branch and arrows, symbolizing the nation’s desire for peace while remaining prepared for defense. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, the Morgan Dollar was closely tied to the enormous quantities of silver produced by American mines, particularly those in the western states. The coin was produced at Philadelphia, San Francisco, New Orleans, Denver, and, for a short period, Carson City, with the mintmark differences making the series particularly interesting to collectors.
Morgan Dollars were struck primarily for use in domestic commerce and to satisfy government requirements to purchase large quantities of silver, but many also found their way into international trade. Production continued until 1904, resumed in 1921, and finally ended that year as the Morgan Dollar was replaced by the Peace Dollar. Today, Morgan Dollars are prized not only for their beautiful design and silver content, but also for the tremendous variety of dates, mintmarks, varieties, and condition rarities found throughout the series. Their connection to the American West, the nation's silver-mining industry, and the economic and political debates surrounding silver in the late 19th century has made the Morgan Dollar an enduring favorite among coin collectors.
