1935 Daniel Boone USA Half Dollar Choice Brilliant Uncirculated (MS64)

The Daniel Boone Bicentennial Half Dollar was first issued in 1934 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Daniel Boone, one of America’s most celebrated frontiersmen, explorers, and pioneers. Designed by Augustus Lukeman, the obverse features an idealized portrait of Boone in his characteristic frontier attire. The reverse is particularly interesting, depicting Boone standing face-to-face with Chief Black Fish, a leader of the Shawnee. Boone is shown holding a rifle and a peace treaty, while Black Fish carries a tomahawk. Behind them is a frontier blockhouse and a rising sun, symbolizing the opening of Kentucky and the American frontier to settlement. The choice of Black Fish is rooted in a real episode from Boone’s life: in 1778, Boone and his men were captured by the Shawnee during a salt-making expedition, and Boone spent several months among them. Chief Black Fish took a particular interest in Boone, eventually adopting him into the Shawnee and giving him the name Sheltowee, or “Big Turtle.”

The Boone half dollar is also notable because what began as a single 1934 commemorative issue continued through 1938, creating a surprisingly complicated series of varieties and mintmarks. Coins were struck at Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco, and legislation in 1935 authorized the addition of a small “1934” to the reverse so that the bicentennial year would remain represented on coins struck after 1934. This resulted in the well-known 1935/1934 varieties, adding considerable interest for collectors. Although as many as 600,000 pieces were authorized, production was far smaller, with the later issues becoming increasingly scarce as demand declined. The coins were sold to help fund projects associated with the Daniel Boone Bicentennial Commission, including the preservation and restoration of historic Boone sites.
