The second-largest country in South America, comprising most of the continent's south, Argentina is bordered by Chile, Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazil, and Uruguay. Its northern portion was part of the Inca Empire in the 15th century, and Spanish colonization began with the founding of Buenos Aires by Pedro de Mendoza in 1536.
