Gustave is the name given to an especially large and vicious crocodile that prowls the northern shore of Lake Tanganyika in Burundi. At over seventy years old, 900 kilograms, and more than six metres long, Gustave has grown to such a gigantic size that zebra, antelope, and fish are too fast for him to catch; instead, he is forced to hunt slower prey. This includes hippos, buffalo -- and humans. Since the 2000s, Gustave has become such a prolific hunter of humans that his death toll is rumoured to be over 300. Of course, the truth of this -- and, indeed, whether or not Gustave still hunts Lake Tanganyika -- is debatable, but his legend persists.
