1901 Glasgow International Exhibition Souvenir Medallion
The Glasgow International Exhibition was one of four international exhibitions held in Glasgow, Scotland throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Running from May to November of 1901, it marked the opening of the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and commemorated the fiftieth anniversary of the UK's first world's fair. Canada and Japan had some of the largest exhibitions, but the real star was Russia, who built a "village" of pavilions that apparently cost Tsar Nicholas an eyewatering £30,000.
This souvenir medallion spotlights the "Eastern Palace," a sprawling example of Victorian Orientalism inspired by Turkish architecture sprinkled with Andalusian and Venetian influence. The obverse shows the overlapping busts of the newly crowned Edward VII and Queen Alexandra.
