The context for minting this medalet has been lost in the nearly two-and-a-half centuries since its production, but it appears to have first appeared around 1790, as some versions of it are dated with that year. It seems likely that they were a response to the Regency Crisis of 1788 and 1789. George III had long suffered from mental illness, but during these years he was plagued by hallucinations, seizures, and violent mania. The British government was still scrambling to find a regent to rule in his place when he suddenly recovered. This medalet overlaps the busts of George and Queen Charlotte, and dubs them, "Patrons of Virtue." Text also reads, "A Present for the New Year," perhaps hinting at an intended purpose.
