Vintage Replica Medal 1896 Athens Olympic Games (scuffs)
The first modern Olympics were held, appropriately, in Athens, Greece, from 6 to 15 April, 1896. 241 athletes from 14 countries participated; Greece walked away with the most medals by far, at 47. This medallion replicates the gold medals awarded to these Olympic pioneers. The obverse depicts Zeus, king of the gods, holding Nike, goddess of victory, in his right hand. Nike holds an olive branch above her head in triumph; wreaths of olive branches were awarded to the victors of the ancient Olympic Games. The reverse shows the historic Acropolis in Athens. The text reads, in Greek, "International Olympic Games in Athens, 1896." The medallion appears to be gold-plated. On the front, the gold colouring has flaked off, exposing some of the base medal underneath.
