1969 Shell "Man In Flight" Sputnik 1 Token
In 1969, to celebrate the Moon Landing, Shell Gas Stations launched the "Man In Flight" collectible coin promo. When you filled up at a Shell station, you recevied one of 16 coins featuring highlights of aviation history: from the myth of Icarus, through Da Vinci, the Wright Brothers, Lindburgh, Zeppelins, and of course, into the Space Age. This entry highlighted Sputnik, the first artificial Earth satellite launched by the Soviet Union in 1957. Sputnik sent a radio signal to Earth for three weeks before falling back to the ground in January of 1958 -- a success that took the United States entirely by surprise and triggered the start of the Space Race.
