Piedfort coins are unusually thick -- usually, twice the thickness and weight of a normal coin. Originating in France in the 12th century, piedforts were probably originally produced as guides for engravers, but they soon became prestigious collector's items amongst royals, nobility, and dignitaries. This is the historical beginning of coin collecting as a hobby, and the primary reason for its designation as "the hobby of kings."

This set from the Royal Mint includes four beautiful £1 piedfort coins dated 1983, 1984, 1985, and 1986. Each coin features one of the symbols of the United Kingdom: the Royal Arms, Scottish thistle, the Welsh leek, and the Irish flax plant. All four coins come in a beautiful display case with four individual certificates of authenticity.
