France 2017 10 Euro Femmes de France Catherine de Medici .900 Silver in Case (minor wear)

Part of the Paris Mint's Femmes de France series, this stunningly detailed 90% silver coin celebrates the life and legacy of Catherine de Medici (1519-1589), one of France's most powerful and influential queens. Catherine was the daughter of Lorenzo de Medici, the formidable de facto ruler of Renaissance Florence. Married to the future Henry II in 1533, Catherine bore witness to the reigns of five successive French kings. Three of them were her sons: Francis II (r.1559-1560), Charles XI (r.1560-1574), and Henry III (r.1574-1589). Catherine was regent and queen mother to them, wielding political influence and sponsoring the arts.

This beautiful French coin features Catherine's portrait on the obverse. The background is based on a tapestry from the Royal Château of Blois, which was one of Catherine's homes. The reverse shows the Château de Chenonceau, another of Catherine's favourite castles, which she expanded and beautified, and an artichoke, which Catherine introduced to French cuisine.
