Part of a series celebrating important historical events, this beautiful French coin remembers the Battle of Cowpens, a major American victory in the War of Independence. Fought on January 17, 1781, near the South Carolina town of Cowpens, Revolutionary general Daniel Morgan managed to defeat a force of about 1,000 Loyalist troops led by Lieutenant-Colonel Banastre Tarleton. Morgan's victory proved to doubtful Revolutionary leaders that defeating the British army in pitched battle was, in fact, possible. This newfound confidence would lead to victory at Yorktown and the end of the war later that year.

Instrumental in the American colonists' victory was France, which supplied funds, supplies, troops, ships, and key volunteers like the Marquis de Lafayette.
