The silver Britannia bullion coin has been in circulation since 1997. The seated Britannia design is based on that used on halfpennies and farthings from 1672, which in turn reflect the original personification of Britannia on the Roman coins of Emperor Hadrian.

Please note that Britannias from before 2013 are minted in .958 silver and are, unfortunately, therefore taxable.
