1969 USA Richard Nixon Official Inauguration Medal
37th President of the United States Richard Milhous Nixon was inaugurated on January 20, 1969. Artistically, Nixon's inauguration medal is unique in a number of ways. Firstly, he was the first president to be depicted in three-quarter profile, rather than the usual full profile of his predecessors. Secondly, the Great Seal on the reverse is actually a reproduction of a crewelwork pattern made by his daughter, Julie, and given to Nixon as a surprise on election night. Looking closely, one can see the rough lettering "To RN-JN" underneath the seal -- i.e. to Richard Nixon, from Julie Nixon. The medal is quite large, measuring about 7cm in diameter and weighing close to 169 grams, or about 5.4 troy ounces.
