This antique medallion celebrates the end of the Second Italian War of Independence, also called the Franco-Austrian War of 1859. In 1858, France agreed to support the Kingdom of Sardinia in a push to expel the Austrian Empire from the Italian peninsula. Hoping to disable Sardinia before it could mobilize, Austria attacked in April of 1859. France declared war immediately, and the war was over by July. With Austria cowed, Sardinia took the opportunity to annex Tuscany, Parma, Modena and Reggio, and the Papal Legations. As compensation for their assistance, France was given Savoy and Nice. The war is seen as crucial to the process of Italian Unification, which would be complete in 1861.
