Bermuda 1999 Celebrating the Dawn of the New Millennium Brilliant Uncirculated Dollar in Presentation Folder (light wear)

Nicknamed the "Isle of Devils" for its treacherous reefs, Bermuda was entirely uninhabited when, in 1609, said reefs became the saving grace of a British ship on her way to the new colony of Jamestown, Virginia. This ship, a galleon called the Sea Venture, had been caught in a tropical storm alongside a flotilla of six others, and, in a last-ditch attempt at survival, had intentionally beached herself on Bermuda's killer reefs. The play worked, and all crew and passengers survived. Not only that, but they found that they had arrived in a place that was, by all accounts, much, much nicer than Jamestown (whose inhabitants were, in fact, on the verge of cannibalizing each other). The shipwrecked colonists made the wise decision to stay, claiming the island in the name of the British Empire. The story went on to inspire one of Shakespeare's final plays, The Tempest, written in 1610-1611.

This 1999 coin celebrates the turn of the millennium, Bermuda-style. The brilliant uncirculated dollar depicts the Sea Venture cresting a wave on the open sea, about to crash into the Bermuda reefs.
