The road to inventing the telephone was long and winding. The first basic model was invented in 1849 by Italian inventor Antonio Meucci, and his ideas were expanded upon by Frenchman Charles Bourseul in 1854. The first US patent for a working phone was filed by Alexander Graham Bell, a professor at Boston University, in 1876. The first telephone line followed in 1877, and then the first switchboard in 1878. In just three years, almost 49,000 telephones were in use.
