1978 Winnipeg, MB, Cree Red River "Indian Dollar" Chief Gordon Lathlin Dollar Token
"Indian Dollars" were trade dollars used in Winnipeg in 1978. A variety of them were minted, each representing different tribes and important figures in First Nations History. This example features Gordon William Lathlin, Chief of the Opaskwayak Cree Nation (then called The Pas). Lathlin is credited with expanding the band's economic base, establishing successful businesses, and supervising the construction of a shopping mall on the reserve. He retired in 1975 and became a consultant on First Nation councils and Manitoba provincial departments.
