In 1534, Francis I of France commissioned Jacques Cartier to journey west, find gold, and discover a passage to Asia. Cartier sailed until he bumped into Newfoundland, and he and his crew promptly began mapping the eastern coast of what is now Canada. He explored the Saint Lawrence River, thinking it a passage to Asia, and made contact with the Mi'kmaq and Iroquois. Cartier returned to France in 1534, considering his voyage a massive success.
In 2009, the Royal Canadian Mint released this beautifully detailed .9999 fine silver coin to celebrate the 475th anniversary of Cartier's first voyage. This coin has been certified by NGC as PF69 -- nearly perfect.
