2016 Canada $20 WWI Battlefront: The Somme Offensive Gilt Fine Silver Coin NGC Certified PF69 UHC (No Tax)

In 1916, soldiers from Canada and Newfoundland found themselves on the Western Front, bogged down in a nightmare of trench warfare that saw both sides pinned by the other's snipers, artillery, land mines, and machine guns. For the upper brass, the only way out of the stalemate was forward. The chosen battlefield was the Somme, where a joint French and British assault would shove brutally into enemy defences until one side broke. The result was an utter bloodbath. Britain lost 57,000 men in a single day -- the heaviest losses the British Army would ever suffer. From here, the Battle of the Somme would stretch on for another four months, during which time more than 650,000 soldiers would be counted as killed, wounded, missing, or taken prisoner. For this catastrophic cost, the Allies won about 10 kilometres of bombed-out dirt.

This 2016 .9999 silver round, minted for the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, honours the sacrifice made by the soldiers of the Canadian Corps. Canadians distinguished themselves at the Somme with unforgettable valour and tenacity, and this is poignantly commemorated on this silver coin. Featuring a detailed engraving of soldiers in combat, the selectively gold-plated figure of Winged Victory below is styled after the French Victory Medal, which was awarded to all Allied soldiers who fought in the First World War.

This coin has been certified by NGC and assigned a grade of PF69 -- nearly perfect.
