Spain 1870 OM 10 Centimos VF-EF (VF-30) $

The 1870 10 Centimos was issued during the Provisional Government following the overthrow of Queen Isabella II during the Glorious Revolution in 1868, which led to the Sexenio Democrático (six revolutionary/democratic years), which was a period of political instability for Spain. The coin is traditionally known as "perra gorda" meaning fat or big female dog, given in reference to the strange lion on the reverse, which was mistaken for a dog when the coin wore out. The coin bears the OM mint mark, which stands for Oeschger Mesdach & Co., a French firm that minted coins out of Strasbourg, France. The 10-centimos was demonetized on October 29th, 1941 and replaced by a new aluminum 10-centimos coin.

Obverse: Hispania seated, facing right, with branch in right hand within beaded circle.
Reverse: Lion facing right, looking left, body unpraised on hind legs, front legs leaning on oval coat of arms
