1908 Canada Specimen Set ICCS Certified SP63 & SP64
Prior to 1908, Canadian coins had been produced at either the Heaton Mint (also known as Heaton & Sons, and the Mint Birmingham), as indicated by the mint mark "H", or the Royal Mint in London. On January 2, 1908, the Royal Canadian Mint was officially opened, with Lord Grey (Governor General of Canada from 1904 to 1911) and Lady Grey activating the presses during a short ceremony. The first coin struck was a 50-cent piece.
To commemorate this occasion, the Royal Canadian Mint produced 1,000 matte finish sets to offer to the general public, which at that time cost $2.00.
Included in the Set:
- 1908 50-cent ICCS Certified SP63
- 1908 25-cent ICCS Certified SP63
- 1908 10-cent ICCS Certified SP63
- 1908 5-cent ICCS Certified SP64
- 1908 1-cent ICCS Certified SP63 Red and Brown
